This project began with the desire to give a classic Porsche 924 a second life, but with a completely contemporary look. The goal was to retain the classic, pure, and clean look of the interior and exterior, combined with an upgraded technology and the latest modern tires.
We started by stripping the chassis down to the chassis, carefully inspecting all components, cleaning them, and fitting them with new seals, bearings, etc. The goal isn't a concours-condition restoration, but rather an affordable restomod: classic in appearance, modern in technology. We're deliberately leaving the rust-free bodywork alone, as we don't want the car to become a garage queen. Everything technically is being replaced to achieve a like-new driving experience.
UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 2025.
The front suspension is now complete and is under the car (see photos). The parts for the rear have arrived and an update will follow once they are on the car.
UPDATE: FEBRUARY 2026:
The rear suspension is ready. Everything has been overhauled and made adjustable, whatever needs to be adjusted for perfect handling and stance!
The Speedlines have been replaced with 924 Le Mans rims for a nicer, more original look. The 924 has been raised to the perfect height to accentuate its compact lines even better. With the car off the lift, we are now going to finish the interior and reinstall the original Porsche Script seats alongside the new black carpet set.
The Porsche 924 was introduced in 1976 as an entry-level model and marked a major step for the brand: for the first time, a Porsche featured a water-cooled, front-mounted, four-cylinder engine with rear-wheel drive. The 2.0-liter engine used in the 924 was originally developed by Audi/Volkswagen for use in the Audi 100, among others. However, Porsche extensively modified this engine to make it suitable for sporty use. The aluminum cylinder head design was combined with a cast iron lower block, which offered a good balance between strength and weight.
The engine received a Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical injection system for precise fuel delivery, and Porsche modified the compression ratio and combustion chambers to achieve better performance. In standard form, the 2.0-liter engine produced 125 hp, enough to propel the lightweight 924 to over 200 km/h (1976 mph)—impressive in 924 for an entry-level sports car. The powerplant was known for its reliability and relatively low maintenance costs, which contributed to the XNUMX's success.
Although purists considered the engine "un-Porsche" due to its VW/Audi origins, the 924 proved that clever engineering and weight distribution were more important than pedigree. This 2.0-liter engine did, however, lay the foundation for later, Porsche-developed four-cylinder engines in the 924 Turbo and 944.
The Porsche 924's suspension played a crucial role in the car's handling and balance. Porsche opted for a transaxle layout with the engine in the front and the transmission in the rear, resulting in a near-ideal weight distribution of 48:52. To capitalize on this potential, the 924 was given a carefully designed chassis.
At the front, Porsche used a conventional but effective MacPherson strut suspension with wishbones and an anti-roll bar. This setup provided direct steering response and reduced unsprung weight, which improved agility.
At the rear, Porsche installed a rigid rear axle construction with torsion bars and a control arm. Although simpler than independent rear suspension, Porsche managed to fine-tune this system for sporty use. The torsion bars allowed for compact mounting and contributed to the low weight and flat load floor.
Together, these components delivered neutral and predictable handling, with a slight tendency to oversteer when lifting off the throttle—typical of classic sports cars. The balanced suspension contributed significantly to the 924's reputation as an excellently handling and easily controlled entry-level Porsche.
GAZ adjustable shock absorbers are a popular upgrade for the Porsche 924, 944, and 968 because they significantly improve handling and ride quality at a very competitive price. These dampers offer adjustable damping, allowing drivers to tailor the firmness to their driving style or application—from comfortable street use to demanding track driving. For 924 drivers who want a more sporty ride, GAZ adjustable shock absorbers offer an affordable and effective way to optimize the chassis. To maximize their road performance, we've combined these with GAZ adjustable top mounts and also fitted the rear blades in an adjustable version. This allows a professional alignment specialist to maximize their performance.
The rear brakes are completely new, every part so that all minor annoyances are solved in one go if you don't replace everything at once.
To make it even more exclusive, new 924 Le Mans have been installed.
The Porsche 924 also lends itself to personalization, and a popular approach is to combine classic sporty elements with a fresh, original look. A popular upgrade is a Momo Prototipo steering wheel. This 350mm diameter steering wheel, with its slim spokes and perforated leather, exudes the motorsport heritage of the 924s and XNUMXs and perfectly complements the character of the XNUMX. Its smaller size also provides a more direct steering feel and enhances the driving experience.
Additionally, the original Porsche black seats, upholstered in fabric with the iconic Porsche lettering, provide an authentic look that instantly recalls the factory specifications of the time. These seats offer excellent lateral support and visually enliven the cockpit without compromising its original character. A new black carpet set contributes to a fresh, well-maintained interior appearance while simultaneously dampening road noise and vibrations, enhancing comfort.
To round it all off, a more modern original Porsche radio with RDS is a subtle yet stylish addition. This detail enhances the classic feel and makes longer journeys more enjoyable. Together, these elements create a balanced interior restoration: sporty, stylish, and true to the roots of the 924, while making the driving experience noticeably more modern and enjoyable.
