Suspension: RS wheel carriers for Porsche 964, 993 van Elephant Racing

Suspension: RS wheel carriers for Porsche 964, 993 van Elephant Racing

Differences standard and RS version
There are five basic differences between RS Styles and Standard Styles:

  • The wheel bearing is moved up about 30mm from the ball joint
  • The knuckle has been relocated and has a reverse tie rod assembly
  • RS uprights are lightweight aluminum just like standard 993 uprights. 964 standard uprights are made of steel.
  • The RS droplink mounting point fits snugly onto the RS swaybar.
  • RS Uprights are compatible with larger 964 Turbo and 993 radial-mount calipers.

Description

Elephant Racing RS Uprights
Special front uprights (wheel carriers) were fitted to the 993 RS and CUP models, properly called RS uprights, but sometimes referred to as GT2 uprights or EVO uprights. The rationale for RS styles is to correct unwanted geometry changes caused by a lower ride height. RS uprights are a great upgrade for any lowered 993 or 964, including C2, C4 and Turbo. The result is superior performance and ride quality.

Correction of RS upright geometry
Lowering a 993/964 with standard uprights causes several unwanted geometry changes, all of which are corrected by the RS uprights.

RS uprights improve camber gain.

The lower wishbone slopes up at the end of the ball joint, putting the suspension at a bad point on the camber curve. RS posts tilt the lower wishbone back down, improving camber gain and ride quality.

RS styles improve suspension travel.

Lowering the car compresses the front strut and reduces available suspension travel. The result is premature bottoming, poor handling and ride quality caused by contact with the stop – causing an abrupt and disturbing rise in the spring rate at that corner that upsets the car. RS styles reset suspension travel.

RS styles reduce impact.

Lowering the car puts the stock tie rod in an unfavorable position on the handlebar bend, making the car a handful to drive over uneven surfaces and requiring frequent adjustment at the steering wheel to maintain a stable trajectory. RS-pillars move the end of the tie rod and position the steering wheel in a favorable position on the curve at a lowered ride height.
