The new 992 Carrera engine is another modern wonder from Porsche. Although the engine capacity remains unchanged at 3,0 liters, there are a plethora of upgrades that elevate this new 9A2 Evo engine head and shoulders above the previous 991.2 model engine. IPD was fortunate to have unlimited access to a 992 Carrera S during our extensive development and testing program. This unlimited time frame proved invaluable, allowing IPD to scrutinize every engineering and design aspect in an effort to create the best-performing Plenum possible.

Like all IPD plenums, the 992 plenum is an efficiency product that delivers significant HP and TQ gains thanks to a superior and patented “Y” design that manages and delivers optimized airflow for better engine performance. The Plenum has been proven to deliver significant net performance gains in both power ranges and is guaranteed to elevate the driving experience of any Carrera.

The development started with a 1D simulation to optimize the handling of pulse peaks in the intake tract using different pipe geometries and known engine parameters of the 992. We then graduated to optimizing 2D cuts of the plenum in CFD, paying special attention was spent on places where counter pressure occurs. gradients that can cause separation. This allowed us to adjust the curvatures of the plenum surfaces and increase our understanding of what was happening in the pipe at full throttle.

Once we were happy with the 2D graphics, we moved to 3D, adding all the geometry to make it a plug-and-play part with optimal performance characteristics. After hundreds of geometric and CFD iterations, we were pleased not only with the increase in airflow compared to the original intake, but also with the uniformity of charge pressure and velocity across the two branches.

The Plenum's efficiency dramatically reduces initial turbo lag, making power and torque available more quickly, but most of the power and torque gains are realized from 4000 rpm right up to redline, where it's needed and where the most fun is experienced. The power and torque gains continue to grow and outperform the factory air distributor as you climb through the revs. Peak gains of more than 30 hp and torque of more than 25 Nm are achieved at 6200 rpm.
