The mechanical petrol injection system was developed based on an idea by Robert Bosch. A certain amount of fuel is injected into the combustion chamber (direct injection) or into the suction chamber (manifold injection) in a certain time by means of a piston pump (pumping element). The first mechanical direct injection system from Bosch was installed in the ME 30 fighter plane in the 109s. This resulted in significantly higher engine performance.
In the automotive industry, mechanical fuel injection using an injection pump, introduced in the 50s, provided higher engine performance combined with lower fuel consumption. However, the mechanics used are complex.
